In this Economy, the Margins for Error are Razor Thin.

by Sean Anderson on February 11, 2009

One of my favorite all-time movie scenes is Al Pacino’s Inch by Inch locker room speech in Any Given Sunday as it does a great job of illustrating how sports, football in this case, is a microcosm of life. I think that the same can be said of business, especially in this economy.

We’re no longer in a situation where a rising tide lifts all boats. The margin for error is so small – one mistep can literally mean that you’re out of business.

That’s not to say there isn’t opportunity. There is opportunity everywhere around you. It’s just that you might need to look and fight harder for it.

A lot of business are in hell right now, believe me. And, you can stay there and blame things on the economy – and get the shit kicked out of you – or you can fight your way out dollar by dollar and come out of the downturn stronger than ever. Cause when you add up all those dollars that’s going to make the difference between winning and losing, between profits and losses.

That’s just the way business is.

Now, what are you gonna do?
